Celebrate National Mutt Day! (July 31st & Dec. 2nd)

splash_page2 Here at Vet Organics, we hold a special place in our hearts for dogs of all shapes and sizes. Whether they’re perfect pedigrees or a beautiful mix of breeds, we believe that every dog should have a warm and loving forever home to call their own. Unfortunately, local shelters are usually packed with mixed-breed dogs that are often faced with the unknown certainty of their future. In fact, mixed breeds tend to be the highest percentage of dogs euthanized. Colleen Paige, a Celebrity Pet Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, decided it was time to help change these circumstances for these loving mixed breed pups. She called this movement National Mutt Day and chose to celebrate it twice a year in an attempt to raise awareness for the plight of the mixed-breed dog.

What is National Mutt Day?

Every year, on July 31 and December 2, animal lovers nationwide are encouraged to support and raise awareness for mutts by adopting or contributing in some way to local shelters. The goal of this special day is to spread the message that mixed-breed dogs, or mutts, are just as loving as pedigree pups and should be considered for adoption, too. Mixed-breed dogs are generally believed to be healthier, better behaved, and live longer than their pedigreed friends. Plus, mixed pups have proven that they can work as bomb and drug-sniffing dogs, as well as great search and rescue guides for the blind.

How Can You Help the Cause?

Colleen Paige set out to achieve an enormous, yet attainable, goal of 10,000 mutt adoptions this year and she can definitely use your help. If you, or someone you know, is looking for a new companion, we urge you to consider adopting a mixed-breed dog from your local shelter instead of purchasing a pet shop pooch or a puppy from a breeder. quote3Of course, if you’re unable to adopt this year, you can always volunteer to walk a dog or donate supplies to your local animal shelter, too. As a way to support the cause even further, Paige encourages dog lovers to make a small financial contribution of $5 to their local shelters—it may seem like a small amount, but it will help in a big way. For a list of additional ways you can support the cause, please visit this page. At Vet Organics, we couldn’t be more proud to support such a wonderful cause. As animal lovers, we believe that every dog should have a fighting chance to find their forever homes and we don’t believe that a dog’s genetic makeup should determine whether or not they are adopted. We hope that you feel the same way.
