Demodectic Mange in Dogs
What is demodectic mange?
Demodectic mange, also called demodex or "red mange," happens when Demodex canis mites, which live in almost every dog's hair follicles, multiply out of control. It is most common in puppies, whose immune systems are still developing, and in adult dogs under stress or with other health problems. Unlike sarcoptic mange, it is usually not contagious to other dogs or people.
Signs to look for
- Patchy hair loss, often around the eyes, mouth, face and front legs
- Red, scaly or crusty skin
- Itching (often milder than with sarcoptic mange)
- Skin odor if the area becomes irritated
Localized vs. generalized
- Localized: a few small patches. It is common in young dogs.
- Generalized: larger areas or the whole body, often with more itching and odor.
Breeds seen more often with demodectic mange include Bulldogs, Pit Bull Terriers, Dalmatians, Shar Peis, Old English Sheepdogs and Boxers. Learn more about demodex mites →
Soothing your dog's skin at home
- Bathe your dog the day before applying EcoMange.
- Gently clean debris and excess drainage from the affected area with a paper towel or a soft, clean towel.
- Shake the bottle well, hold it upright, and spray the area generously so the spray gets past the fur and saturates the skin. Avoid the eyes, mouth and genitals.
- Give your dog a treat and let the area dry.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 every other day for one week, then once a week until no longer needed.
