Soothe Your Pup with an iPod for Dogs

 iPod for Dogs

Most people love using their iPod, iPhone, or Android device to listen to some relaxing tunes at the end of a rough workday. But did you know there’s now a similar option for dogs? A new product, called the iCalmDog, is dubbing itself the “iPod for dogs” and promising owners a way to keep dogs calm on long trips or during other stressful situations. Since it’s been proven that certain noises can in fact help dogs as they react to stress, the iCalmDog might just be something worth considering. The idea originated with a lecture about the effect of music on the human nervous system. A pianist named Lisa Spector, who attended the lecture, noticed that playing the piano seemed to calm her dog down during high-anxiety moments. She then reached out to the lecturer, Joshua Leeds, to see about finding a way to help animals deal with anxiety via sound. Over the last 11 years, the two experts have worked to conduct research, compose music, and design a device that could be deployed to consumer homes. The result is the iCalmDog, which plays music specifically designed for different animals and situations. According to Leeds, music for humans is very similar to music for dogs but requires a few core adjustments. Tone, tempo, and pattern all need to be reorganized. Dogs have a broader range of hearing which requires music made for that pattern. Slower tempos calm animals while faster tempos can inspire older animals to play. And the arrangement of the songs has been simplified so they are easy for dogs to understand. Classical music has also been discovered to be the most effective music. The iCalmDog is now available for curious pet owners with anxious animals; you can order the device along with compatible music sets directly from its official site.
