In the old days, simply having a yard and a dog bed was considered enough to keep a puppy happy. However, increased spending on pets and the products and services around them has opened a floodgate of new ideas, from dog gyms to in-home dog sitting. The latest craze among new homeowners? Full-featured dog suites built directly into their homes. Luxury developers have caught on to the idea that people put a premium on their pet’s care, and that premium comes with an equally premium price tag. New homes in one area of Los Angeles now boast an optional 170-square-foot pet suite with a washing station, hand-held sprayer, leash connections, and a dryer. Los Angeles isn’t the only city on the dog-friendly path. Apartment complexes and new homes alike across the nation are offering more amenities than ever to pet owners. Many complexes now include dog walks or dog parks, pet-friendly lease terms, and dog washes. Pet hotels have popped up at an incredible rate, as have doggy daycares, dog bakeries, and other dog-centric activities. Construction companies and management agencies know that with $60 billion set to be spent by pet owners in 2014, there’s plenty of room to get in on what continues to be a booming industry.
