Join the tens of thousands who like the National Dog Day Facebook page! Dogs are our best friends, right? So what better way to thank our best friends than with a nationwide day to honor them? Mark your calendar now for National Dog Day on August 26th! This special day was set aside to give dogs the attention and honor they deserve, as well as celebrate dogs rescued from abuse and homelessness. Originating in 2004, National Dog Day was created by the National Dog Day Foundation as a way to encourage dog ownership, regardless of breed, and promote the idea of all dogs living in safe and happy homes free from abuse. It makes perfect sense that the foundation’s lofty and admirable goal is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.
Ways to Celebrate National Dog Day
Get social: Know of an upcoming local event for a pet adoption agency? Email, Facebook, Instagram, and other sites are great ways of helping to spread the word. Just think about it; you could be connecting someone with a dog that will change their life forever. Plus, by encouraging others to give a dog a home, you’re helping to save a deserving dog.
Clean it up: Chances are you’ve got boxes of old linens stored somewhere around the house. How about the stuff at the back of the closet? You’ve may have never thought about it, but you can donate your old linens such as blankets and bath towels to a local animal shelter. Your faded comforter can live up to its name, and provide a few more weeks or months of comfort by giving dogs a place soft to sleep. And old towels with bleach stains or holes still work perfectly well to dry freshly bathed shelter newcomers.
Give ‘til it hurts: Encourage friends, neighbors, relatives, and co-workers to give pet food, kitty litter, and toys to a local shelter. You may even want to have some sort of donation contest, and can engage the kids, to make it more interesting and get added energy to your donation drive =.
Make your free time count: There’s no better way to put your leisure time to good use than by volunteering at a local pet shelter. There is always a great need for people to help by walking dogs, cleaning cages, answering phones, as well as performing other jobs.
Whether you can help out at a local pet shelter or just want to spend National Dog Day by spoiling your own furry friend, take the time to consider the very special place dogs have in our lives and hearts. Dogs are trusted companions, freely offering us unconditional love. One day hardly seems enough to thank them for all the special times they have given us. However, National Dog Day on August 26th is a start! (We welcome hearing the ways you've supported your local shelter below; please share!)
