Puggle Ear Infections: Signs, Causes and Ear Care

A Puggle walks into a room nose first. Half Beagle and half Pug, this cheerful crossbreed tends to combine the Beagle's sniffing obsession with the Pug's love of the sofa. It also inherits a pair of long, velvety Beagle-style ears and some of the Pug's wrinkly, allergy-prone skin, a mix that keeps many Puggle owners busy with ear care.

Read on for what makes Puggle ears vulnerable, the early signs of trouble, the usual causes, when to call your vet and a simple routine for a small, food-motivated dog.

Why Puggles are prone to ear problems

Each parent breed brings something to the table, and the combination is what matters.

  • Long, soft drop ears from the Beagle side. Most Puggles have low-set ears that hang beside the cheeks and cover the canal opening. Air moves slowly underneath, so warmth and moisture linger.
  • A shorter muzzle and facial wrinkles from the Pug side. Many Puggles have a squished-looking face with folds over the nose. The skin in those folds and around the ears can become irritated in the same dog.
  • Allergy-prone skin. Both parent breeds can have sensitive skin, and allergies are a common reason for itchy, inflamed ears in Puggles.
  • Nose-to-the-ground habits. The scent hound in a Puggle wants to follow every trail. Long ears drag through grass, mud and leaves, picking up dirt and seeds along the way.
  • A short, dense coat. Puggles shed steadily, and loose hair and dander can collect around the ear opening.

If you have read our Beagle ear guide, you will recognize the long, hanging ears and outdoor nose. The Pug page focuses on small, folded ears and a flat face. A Puggle sits between the two, and individual dogs may lean more toward one parent than the other.

Early signs of ear trouble in a Puggle

Puggles are usually upbeat, so changes in habits are worth noticing. Look for:

  • Shaking the head or flapping the ears more than usual
  • Scratching at the ears or rubbing the face along the carpet
  • Licking the paws or chewing at the feet along with ear scratching
  • Red or pink skin on the underside of the ear flap
  • Dark, greasy wax at the canal opening
  • A yeasty or musty odor from the ears or the facial folds
  • Holding one ear differently, or tilting the head

Common causes of Puggle ear problems

Allergies. Environmental triggers such as pollen and dust mites, and sometimes food ingredients, cause skin inflammation that often shows up in the ears first.

Moisture under the flap. Baths, rain and wet grass leave the canal damp, and a hanging ear keeps it that way.

Debris from sniffing. Dirt, plant material and grass seeds collect on ears that sweep the ground.

Yeast and bacteria. These are normal skin residents that can overgrow once the ear is warm and inflamed. Your vet can examine a sample to see what is there.

Ear mites. Mites are more common in puppies and dogs that live with other animals. Our guide to ear mites in dogs explains how they differ from allergy itch.

Wax buildup. Limited airflow lets wax collect in the canal.

When to see your vet

Cleaning is for maintenance, not for ears that already look sore. Have your vet take a look if you notice:

  • Pain: your Puggle yelps, flinches or will not let you touch the ear
  • Head tilt, loss of balance, circling or unusual eye movements
  • Bleeding, or a swollen, puffy ear flap (this can be a blood blister called an aural hematoma)
  • A bad smell together with discharge
  • Redness or swelling that is getting worse
  • Symptoms that have not improved after a few days, or keep coming back

Avoid vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol and homemade oil mixtures, which can irritate an inflamed canal. Keep cotton swabs out of the ear canal.

An ear and wrinkle routine for Puggles

A Puggle that loves food is usually easy to win over. Check the ears and facial folds a couple of times a week, clean the ears about once a week, and add a clean after baths or muddy walks. If your vet is treating allergies, follow the schedule they recommend.

  1. Set up on a table or your lap. A small dog on a non-slip mat at waist height is easier to see and handle.
  2. Wipe the wrinkles. Clean the facial folds with a soft damp cloth and dry them well.
  3. Lift the ear. Flip each long ear up and check the underside and canal opening. If it looks red, swollen or has discharge, stop and contact your vet.
  4. Fill the canal. Fill the ear canal with a dog ear cleaner.
  5. Massage. Rub the base of the ear for 60 to 90 seconds.
  6. Allow the shake. Let your Puggle shake its head.
  7. Wipe the visible area. Use cotton or gauze on the inner flap and opening only.
  8. Reward. A small treat keeps a food-motivated Puggle happy to come back next time. Use a portion of the daily food allowance if weight is a concern.

After walks: Give the ears a quick wipe after your Puggle has been sniffing through long grass or leaves, and check for seeds.

Puggle ear FAQ

Are Puggle ears more like a Beagle's or a Pug's?

Most Puggles have longer, hanging ears closer to a Beagle's, but some have shorter, folded ears more like a Pug's. The routine is the same either way.

My Puggle's face folds and ears both smell. Is that related?

It can be. Allergy-prone skin often affects several areas at once. Your vet can look at the face, ears and paws together.

How can I keep my Puggle's ears cleaner on walks?

You cannot stop a scent hound from sniffing, but a quick wipe and check afterward removes dirt and seeds before they cause irritation.

Can a Puggle puppy have its ears cleaned?

Start with gentle handling and visual checks early. For cleaning products, follow the label age guidance and ask your vet if your puppy's ears look dirty or itchy.
