What is National Mutt Day?
Every year, on July 31 and December 2, animal lovers nationwide are encouraged to support and raise awareness for mutts by adopting or contributing in some way to local shelters. The goal of this special day is to spread the message that mixed-breed dogs, or mutts, are just as loving as pedigree pups and should be considered for adoption, too. Mixed-breed dogs are generally believed to be healthier, better behaved, and live longer than their pedigreed friends. Plus, mixed pups have proven that they can work as bomb and drug-sniffing dogs, as well as great search and rescue guides for the blind. How Can You Help the Cause?
Colleen Paige set out to achieve an enormous, yet attainable, goal of 10,000 mutt adoptions this year and she can definitely use your help. If you, or someone you know, is looking for a new companion, we urge you to consider adopting a mixed-breed dog from your local shelter instead of purchasing a pet shop pooch or a puppy from a breeder.
