How to Combat Hot Spots that Come Back or Don’t Heal

Dog Skin Dogs
Hot spots can be as unpredictable as the number of factors that cause them. That’s why it’s important to address hot spots right away and try to figure out their underlying cause. But what happens when you've tried everything and the nasty things just wont go away? In this case, you need to have a plan B that you can rely on to get your dog or cat better. Luckily, we have some tips that will help you if the hot spots on your pet do not heal or keep coming back.
1

Help your pet get better by checking for the root cause of hot spots.

Identify the Root Cause

There are many different issues and allergies that can cause dogs to have hot spots. Some of the most common ones are:
  • Food allergies
  • Fungal diseases
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Pests like fleas
  • Other allergies
These are easy to determine and swift to treat. But sometimes, the underlying issue can be more serious or harder to diagnose, which then leads to hot spots re-ocurring or never really healing properly.

What Else Can Be Causing My Pet’s Hot Spots?

Once you figure out what’s causing it, you’ll be able to get rid of the hot spots permanently! We suggest getting the help of a professional since lab tests might be required to pinpoint the issue. Here are some problems that you might need to keep in mind:

Inappropriate Use of Collars

This might come as a surprise but, the excessive use of collars cause hot spots. For example, certain dog breeds like Labrador retrievers and German shepherds tend to tag at the leash, which has been related to thyroid issues. This can ultimately lead to Hypothyroidism. Constant tagging causes gland inflammation, when your dog’s immune cells start to attack the gland to remove the problem. Then, since there is less thyroid hormone available, the imbalance can cause hot spots!

3

Use collars with care, especially for certain breeds - they could lead to underlying issues like thyroid dysfunction.

Too Much Exercise

Physical activity can be an excellent way to keep your pet healthy, boost morale and have fun. But since a lot of exercise takes place outdoors, there are many allergens that your pet could come in contact with and you will never know exactly what they are. Swimming can also lead to some allergic reactions and therefore cause hot spots. If your pet is getting hot spots, closely monitor when they are outdoors to ensure that there is nothing that triggers allergies. You can also suspend some of the activities while your pet heals up.

Examine the spine

Hot spots in pets are closely related to spine problems and their location can be a sign that a certain part of the spine could be having difficulties. For instance, hot spots on the forepaws are often related to the cervical spine.

If your pet keeps having difficulties with hot spots, take them to a professional and have their spine and the surrounding muscles examined. A sore spine can be the root cause of all the problems. Conditions like disc disease, spondylosis, and arthritis may cause hot spots as well, since they also affect surrounding muscles causing a lot of pain and discomfort for your pet.

2

Check your pet's spine for issues if your dog has recurring hot spots. They may be in more pain than you think...
