Mange in Dogs
What is mange?
Mange is a skin condition caused by tiny mites that live on or in a dog's skin. Most dogs carry a few mites with no problems. Mange starts when the mites multiply, often when a dog's immune system is stressed, and the skin reacts.
Signs of mange in dogs
- Constant scratching, licking and chewing
- Red, irritated skin
- Patchy hair loss, often on the face, ears, elbows and legs
- Scabs, crusts or scaly patches
- A musty or unpleasant skin odor
The two common types
- Sarcoptic mange (scabies): very itchy and contagious between dogs, and it can cause a temporary rash in people. It often starts on the ears, elbows and belly.
- Demodectic mange (demodex, "red mange"): usually not contagious. It shows up as patchy hair loss, often in puppies or in dogs under stress. It can be localized (a few spots) or generalized (large areas). More about demodectic mange →

Caring for your dog's skin at home
- Bathe your dog the day before, with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo.
- Gently clean any debris from the affected skin with a paper towel or a soft, clean towel.
- Spray EcoMange generously so it gets past the fur and onto the skin, then let it dry. No rinsing.
- Repeat every other day for one week, then once a week until no longer needed.
- Wash bedding, collars and toys, and keep your dog clean and well groomed.
